Information about ShareGear

How it works

How it works

ShareGear is a peer to peer sharing marketplace. It's for users to list items they own for other people to hire, and to hire items from other users.

How it works is really simple:

  • Owners list their item for hire on the site. They can control the booking calendar, so when an item is needed for personal use it shows as not available
  • Hirers browse the site, find something they wish to hire, and enter a rental request for the dates they need it for. They enter their payment details, however no charges are made until the Owner accepts the hire
  • The Owner receives a notification of request to hire. They can accept or decline the request, or communicate with the person requesting the hire to agree the details of pickup and return of the item
  • Once the request is accepted the payment is transferred
  • On the date of the hire, the  Hirer and Owner meet at the agreed time to pickup the item. The Hirer uses and then returns the item to the Owner at the end of the hire
  • Both parties have an opportunity to rate each other for the benefit of other users

Fees and charges

ShareGear does not charge any fees to become a member, or to list an item. Fees are only charged when an item is hired by another user.

There are two fees which apply, and these are both automatically deducted when Owners receive their payment from Hirer's:

  • PayPal (the ShareGear payment gateway) charge a % fee on each transaction. This fee may be changed at any time by PayPal so please refer to https://www.paypal.com/nz/webapps/mpp/paypal-fees-table for the latest information. The rate as at November 2017 was 3.4% for New Zealand customers and a $0.45 per transaction fee
  • ShareGear charges a fee of 15% on successful hires, with a minimum charge of $1

Damage & Liability

In the event of damage or loss of hired equipment, Hirers are responsible for the cost of repair. Hirers contents (or other) insurance cover may cover hired items.

Owners may elect to require a cash bond, at their own discretion and ShareGear is not involved in this process, however ShareGear strongly recommends that any Owners requiring a bond make this very clear in their listing.

Owners of valuable items listed on ShareGear may like to consider obtaining insurance cover for commercial hire of the item. In many cases, standard insurance cover does not apply when items are commercially hired to others. ShareGear is currently working with some of New Zealands top insurance providers to develop an insurance product for owners specifically for hire of items through ShareGear and this will be available soon.

Refunds

ShareGears model uses an approach where Hirers prepay for hires. This is to protect Owners from loss, however there will be times when Hirers have prepaid and the hire does not proceed due to not fault of their own.

In those events, Hirers should request a refund from the Owner directly, and also contact ShareGear with details of the refund request by contacting team@sharegear.co.nz, and we will refund the ShareGear fee if approved (we'll approve all reasonable requests).

Because ShareGear uses PayPal as the payment gateway, PayPal buyer protection is also available. This means if there are any issues gaining a refund from the owner you can follow the PayPal process at https://www.paypal.com/nz/webapps/mpp/paypal-buyer-protection.

Approved listings

Please do not list any illegal Items or Items which are intended for illegal use on ShareGear. If the ShareGear team determine a listing to be inappropriate it may be removed.

If you list any items that require a special licence to operate, or have age limits, then it is the Owners responsibility to ensure the Hirer meets those requirements.
